“To teach is to learn twice”
was said by Joseph Joubert. He is absolutely right.
I’ve recently starting giving short talks about various topics at work. Even though I know the information in my head, it takes a whole other set of brain cells to teach and speak intelligently about those subjects.
I think this really applies to motherhood and parenting. When we teach our children patience, kindness and gratitude, we are teaching that child as well as our own heart. We both benefit from being gracious and kind.
It doesn’t take any effort on my part to give a compliment to someone in the grocery store or a coworker. An intentional yet simple ‘I really like your shoes’ helps people around me learn that it’s ok to be vulnerable and give these compliments and I learn and am reminded of the good feelings generated from a genuine compliment.
“To teach is to learn twice”. Whether we are teaching a room full young students, co-workers or our children, teaching and modeling graciousness, kindness and gratitude is beneficial for both the teacher and student. So give that extra compliment or work even harder next time you’re about to lose your patience with your child. Teaching and modeling Gods ways is good for everyone.
